We are thrilled to officially welcome you to the blog for The Poston Preserve, our private, family-operated nature preserve and wildlife sanctuary located in the heart of Manning, South Carolina. This space will be our journal, a place to share the ongoing story of this land and our enduring connection to it.
More Than Land, It’s a Legacy

The Poston Preserve is a living piece of history, a continuation of a family stewardship that began over 250 years ago in the South Carolina Lowcountry. Our roots trace back to John Poston, who first arrived in the American colonies in the 1700s. The family journeyed from England to Pennsylvania and down the Great Philadelphia Wagon Road, eventually settling in the Pee Dee backcountry of South Carolina. One ancestor, Andrew Poston, left such a mark that a railroad stop—and later, a town—was named after him.
Founded by Dr. Harold Chalmers Poston, Jr., the Preserve is now stewarded by the 8th and 9th generations of the Poston family, continuing a profound, multi-generational connection to this soil.
A Glimpse into the Preserve

Spanning 300 acres, the Preserve is a diverse mosaic of South Carolina’s natural beauty. Our landscape features miles of wooded trails, vast open fields, and the serene, aerated Dragonfly Pond, which serves as a central landmark. These varied habitats provide a protected sanctuary for a variety of native plants and animals, offering a glimpse into the region’s rich ecology.
Our Mission: Conservation, Heritage, and Quiet Enjoyment

At the core of our mission lies a profound commitment to the principles of conservation, the preservation of cultural heritage, and the promotion of quiet enjoyment for all who engage with our spaces and initiatives. This multifaceted approach is designed to ensure that both natural environments and historical narratives are safeguarded for future generations while also providing a serene and enriching experience for visitors and community members alike.
Conservation: Protecting Our Natural Resources
Our dedication to conservation is rooted in the belief that the natural world is a vital resource that sustains life and enriches our experiences. We actively engage in various initiatives aimed at protecting ecosystems, preserving biodiversity, and promoting sustainable practices. This includes habitat restoration projects, wildlife protection efforts, and educational programs that raise awareness about the importance of maintaining the delicate balance of our environment. By fostering a deep respect for nature, we hope to inspire individuals and communities to take action towards sustainable living, ensuring that our planet remains vibrant and healthy for generations to come.
Heritage: Celebrating Our Cultural Legacy
Heritage is an integral component of our mission, as it encompasses the rich tapestry of history, traditions, and cultural expressions that define our communities. We strive to honor and preserve these legacies through various programs and initiatives that celebrate the stories, art, and customs that have shaped our identity. This includes the restoration of historical sites, the organization of cultural events, and the promotion of local artisans and craftspeople. By engaging with our heritage, we not only pay tribute to those who came before us but also foster a sense of belonging and pride within our communities, encouraging individuals to connect with their roots and share their unique narratives.
Quiet Enjoyment: Creating Spaces for Reflection and Connection
Quiet enjoyment is a fundamental aspect of our mission, as we recognize the importance of providing spaces where individuals can find peace, reflect, and connect with both nature and each other. We design our environments to be welcoming and accessible, encouraging visitors to immerse themselves in the tranquility that surrounds them. Whether it's through serene walking trails, peaceful gardens, or contemplative areas, we aim to create opportunities for relaxation and introspection. Our commitment to quiet enjoyment also extends to fostering a sense of community, where people can gather, share experiences, and build meaningful relationships in a serene setting.
Conclusion: A Unified Vision for a Sustainable Future
In conclusion, our mission is a unified vision that intertwines conservation, heritage, and quiet enjoyment into a holistic approach to stewardship. By prioritizing these elements, we not only protect and celebrate the natural and cultural treasures of our world but also create enriching experiences that resonate with individuals from all walks of life.
Through this blog, we invite you to join us on this journey. We’ll share stories of the wildlife that call this place home, the seasonal changes that sweep across the landscape, and the deep family history that makes this preserve more than just a piece of land—it’s a living testimony to grit, river mud, and one very stubborn family tree.
